The Windows 8 Unleashed Coding Competition is designed to encourage developers to innovate with Microsoft Windows 8 and increase the number of high-quality apps available in the Windows Store. ComponentArt is sponsoring this competition and will award $10,000 USD to the author(s) of the best application as decided by the Panel of Judges.

1. General Rules

  • The use of ComponentArt products is not required to participate in the Windows 8 Unleashed Coding Competition.

  • All contestants must be registered attendees of a Windows 8 Unleashed event to qualify.

  • Entry submission process is as follows:

    1. Each Entry app must first be submitted to the Windows 8 App Store;

    2. Once the Entry has been submitted and entered the Windows 8 App Store certification process, the Entrant must confirm the submission by emailing the following details to win8competition@componentart.com: Entry app name, Entrant's full name, email address, physical address, and country of residency;

    3. ComponentArt will confirm the validity of the Entry by email.

  • The Entry must not contain any content or material that is obscene, sexually explicit, defamatory, or otherwise inappropriate as determined by ComponentArt at its absolute discretion.

  • Each Entry must be of the Entrant's original creation, created solely by the Entrant(s), must not infringe the copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or other intellectual rights of any person or entity.

  • Entrants may submit multiple Entries.

  • All Entrants must be of legal age in their country.

  • ComponentArt reserves the right to disqualify any Entry at any time, if it determines it does not meet the requirements of the Competition.

  • ComponentArt employees are not eligible to participate in the Competition.

  • NO RECOURSE TO JUDICIAL OR OTHER PROCEDURES: To the extent permitted by law, the rights to litigate, to seek injunctive relief or to make any other recourse to judicial or any other procedure in case of disputes or claims resulting from or in connection with this Competition are hereby excluded, and any Entrant expressly waives any and all such rights.

2. Schedule & Deadlines

The Competition will be conducted according to the following schedule:

  • January 31, 2013 – Entry submission deadline (changed from December 31, 2012). All Entries must be submitted to the Windows 8 App store for approval and the Entry details must be emailed to ComponentArt by January 31, 2013.

  • February 28, 2013 – App publication deadline (changed from January 31, 2013). All Entry apps must complete the certification process and be published in the Windows 8 App Store by February 28, 2013.

  • March 18, 2013 – Winner announced (changed from February 15, 2013). The winner, as selected by the Panel of Judges, will be announced on ComponentArt's website before 5pm ET on Monday, March 18, 2013.

3. Grading

Each Entry will be graded by the Panel of 5 Judges. Each Judge will award 1-5 points in each of the following categories:

  1. Value to User

  2. Technical Merit

  3. User Experience

  4. Performance & Stability

  5. Originality

The maximum number of points that an Entry app can receive is 125.

If more than 25 Entries are submitted for the Competition, ComponentArt staff will select the top 25 semi-finalist Entries to be reviewed by the Panel of Judges.
