Data Visualization vs UI Framework

When the Data Visualization Control Suite is released, does that mean you're discontinuing the current UI Framework?

I know our current subscription will entitle us to a free 1 year Enterprise subscription, but at the moment I can't see that we'll use that much of the new suite - certainly not enough to justify an extra $4,000 a year! If the UI Framework is discontinued, I don't think we'll be renewing our subscription. Even the Professional version costs $1,200 more than the current UI Framework.

Also, the pricing seems slightly unclear. At the top of the page, you claim than an Enterprise subscription will be $5,298; at the bottom of the page, you claim "pricing will range ... to $3,999 for the full Enterprise version". Which price is correct?

Hello and thank you for your inquiry trinet. In response to your questions:

1. No, we are not discontinuing our UI Framework product line. We will continue to enhance and support those products.

2. We are offering free Data Visualization Enterprise licenses (valued at $3,999) as a courtesy to all of our customers who have current UI Framework subscriptions. Please note that renewal prices are typically 50% of the original price (we will publish the full list of renewal prices right before the release), so renewing those licenses would be $1,999 or $1,249 for Enterprise and Professional editions respectively. Also note that you can renew any number of years of UI Framework now for $599 – and get the full Data Visualization Enterprise licenses included at no extra cost. This offer expires once we ship the full Data Visualization release.

3. Once released, UI Framework and Data Visualization will be sold as separate products for $1,299 and $3,999 respectively (assuming the Enterprise edition of Data Visualization). Therefore, those who buy UI Framework now for $1,299 are getting a total value of $5,298.

I hope this helps!

OK, so the last update to the UI Framework was February 7th - almost five months ago. The last news item to mention it was November 17th 2010. The last blog post to mention it was February 23rd 2010.

There doesn't seem to be any sort of official road-map or plans for any future updates. Everyone at ComponentArt seems to be concentrating on the Data Visualization suite, and ignoring the UI Framework.

So much for "we are not discontinuing our UI Framework product line". I've been a customer since 2006, but I doubt I'll be renewing next year if this trend continues! >:(

We'll be discussing details of the upcoming UI.Framework release very soon.  The intention was always for it to follow the DV release and it's immediately service releases, which is the phase we're in now- a little off the schedule we hoped for, and  I apologize for the delay.

So when can we see/hear something/anything? It is a shame that you did not even make a service release in these 5 months with the IE9 fixes.

We intend to ship SP2 later this month, with UI.Framework to follow.

This is probably only bug fixes again, but when are we going to see new features. The last new features where added February 25, 2010 and all we got the last year of our subscription where only some bug fixes. I know we got a license for Data Visualization last year, but we are not interested in that.  We are already waiting a long time on for instance feature request for the scheduler, such as: localization (we are Dutch) link, limiting user interaction. For instance not able to move an appointment (we have to use unofficial hacks link). What is the use of being able to cancel the modify, but you can still move the appointment. You should be able to lock an appointment (nothing is allowed).

IMHO there are very good alternatives on the market. Unless CA can come up with some amazing new features, I'm struggling to justify spending $1099 every year for a few bug fixes.

You have a strange idea of "very soon".

Which month was that again?

There's still no update, not even a service pack.
There's still nothing on the blogs or the news.
There's still no sign of a road-map, or any plans to update.

Also, I've just noticed that this forum is using TinyMCE, not the ComponentArt Editor. Just about says it all, really.

UI.Framework is still following SP2, which is is taking longer than we had expected or wanted to get out the door.  Current estimates put us about two weeks off, but dates are subject to change. Sorry for the further delay.

What I find strange is that probably you have very limited development resources and can only develop one product at the time. But if you are releasing multiple products, you should also have the resources to develop/support multiple products (at least for bug fixes). When you finally switch to the UI.Framework then the development for Data Visualization is going to stop again and these customers are out of luck for the next months on bug fixes/new features? What if Microsoft would develop this way? We would have a new windows version every twenty years? I think you should really expand your development team.

Also for the next release you should really update the banner control and add some sort of image slider / itemflow (like in the Silverlight suite) component. Also you should really invest in some reporting engine in the future with support for excel/word/pdf etc. Also an export option of the datagrid to excel or pdf would also be nice (like you competitors already have already for some time).

So now you have three major products with, apparently, enough developers to support and develop one product at a time.

I'd just like to welcome all the people who spent $2-4K on DataViz to the world of disgruntled ComponentArt users. Congratulations - it looks like your money bought a whole two weeks of development before your product was pushed aside for the new toys!

Over seven months, and still no sign of SP2 for UIF. I think Telerik might be gaining a customer when my subscription expires...

The last months I have read this statement in several postings and in fact, as it turns out, is not true. You were developing a new product and since this is a new product, will get first support and a first service pack. I think we are going to switch to telerik or essential objects, at least there are developing new features/bug fixes all the time. For this year subscription fee we got nothing, absolutely nothing. So disappointed.

Hello everyone,

I thought I'd chime in here, to confirm some coming updates:

We are expecting to release an update of UI.Framework in October. It will include updates to our MVC suite to allow it to work with the Razor engine, along with a few other fixes and features.

As always, please let us know what you would like to have us focus on. Share your thoughts on top-priority features and fixes and we will take those into consideration for the coming development sprint.

As for Data Visualization for .NET, a significant update (2011 SP2) is coming this week. It include numerous fixes and improvements to charts, PivotGrid and others, and a number of new map features.

I hope this gives you a better idea of our near-term road map.

Regards,

Milos Glisic

Director of Development

ComponentArt Inc.
