TopMenuItem display Image when selected

I am trying to customize the menu to display an image when a menu item is selected.  Everytime I click on one of the menu items it flickers and shifts to the left without displaying the image.  Also the sides of the image are getting "cut off" and the image only displays on the first and last menu items.

Does this menu support displaying an image on selected?  How can I get this to work?
