ComponentArt Web.UI 2008.1 Details Announced

We've been hard at work on Web.UI 2008.1 for a few months now, and I am happy to report that we are rapidly approaching the feature-complete beta milestone for the next major Web.UI release. This means that we are ready to announce what will be included in v2008.1 as well as our anticipated release dates.

Web.UI 2008.1 Overview

The upcoming Web.UI release will include the following major new features:

New control: ComponentArt Upload for ASP.NET
Extended suite-wide support for web service binding
Expanded Editor features:

New "Media Explorer" dialog, with uploading capabilities
Streamlined skinning

We are on schedule to ship the full production release of Web.UI 2008.1 by the end of March. The first public feature-complete pre-release build of v2008.1 should be available in about two weeks.

New Control: ComponentArt Upload for ASP.NET

We are excited to yet again expand the Web.UI suite by adding a highly demanded file upload control. As always, we are aiming at the very top of the market, so this control will include all the high-end features that you've come to expect from ComponentArt's ASP.NET controls: multi-file uploading, AJAX progress indicators, comprehensive client-side API, full control over the upload file and folder details.

We were able to put our client-side templating technology to a good use to provide some snazzy and highly customizable UIs. I'll give you a taste of what's coming by including a product screen shot from our development branch:

It would be nice if there was a multi-file upload where you could select multiple files at once and then still have programatic access to the files for resizing images, renaming them etc. I have something like the screen shot above going right now where you manually add another browse button over and over and over but it would be nice to use something like the new yui (yahoo user interface) flash-based multi-upload But still get asp.net programmatic access to the files during upload for renaming and resizing etc.

The control looks great. Can't wait to get my hands on it and see what it has to offer. I've been looking for a good file upload component for years now. Would be great if this control works when a website requries authentication. Most upload controls I've found so far use the Adobe Flash plugin/control which does not support authenticated websites.

Will it work within an UpdatePanel? That is the biggest need that we have. We've found controls that use an iframe to accomplish this, so that the page doesn't postback...but they don't look very good. We'd LOVE to have one with ComponentArt's professional style.

Thank you for your feedback everyone. I'll try to answer all of your questions: 1. Mono/Linux is not currently supported, although this is something we are planning to do in the future; 2. Yes - we do support programmatic access to the collection of uploaded files for renaming, etc.; 3. Our interface is not Flash-based, it's HTML; 4. We don't support the ability to resume "broken" uploads, HTTP uploads simply don't work that way; 5. The controls works with authentication; 6. The control doesn't need the UpdatePanel, it has built-in capabilities to avoid postbacks; 7. Multiple file batch upload is supported; 8. AJAX progress indicators will work with web gardens, but they do require "sticky sessions"; 9. Windows Server 2008/IIS 7 is supported.
